Current Governing Institutions

In this module you will:

  • The purpose, structure, and activities of three international organizations:
    • the International Monetary Fund (IMF)
    • the World Bank
    • the World Trade Organization (WTO)
  • Take the Current Government Quiz

Many commentators on Globalization -- both supporters and detractors -- feel that the functions and activities of these organizations represent the very heart of Globalization. According to many supporters, these organizations are a major force for good in our world. According some detractors, these organizations constitute a de facto world government that effectively controls the economies of underdeveloped nations and ensures the economic and cultural dominance of the Western world.

The manner in which these organizations conduct their activities and the nature of the controversy surrounding them will be dealt with in more detail in the follow-on course to this Introduction, Understanding Globalization (G102). One the most vocal and visible critics of the IMF is Nobel prize winner David Stiglitz, whose book Globalization and its Discontents caused much a great deal of controversy. This is a name and a book title you should be familiar with. For now, be aware that these organizations are frequently targeted by critics as being destructive instruments of economic, political, and cultural domination.

Go to the following web sites and page through some of the introductory material at each site. You may notice that these sites reflect a keen awareness of the kinds of criticisms directed at their organizations!

1. What is the mission of each organization (its essential goal, purpose, or primary function).

2. What are some of the other important functions or services these organizations provide?

3. How many members does each organization have?

Expect quiz questions related to the function of these organizations! You may also wish to make note of some of the other essential facts about these organizations that your survey reveals.
